Dear Coffee Subscribers,
This month’s spotlight coffee (the one that all subscribers will get regardless of the roast type or number of bags you have subscribed to) is a late harvest from June 2018 of the Nacimiento Pacas from Honduras which has been prepared exclusively for you as filter and espresso roast (i.e. it is currently not available on our webshop for normal orders). Those who ordered 2 bags of filter coffee will get a bag of the Caballero’s Java coffee, so you can compare what a fruity Honduran tastes like next to a more tea-like/chocolaty one. And for fun, 3 bag filter subscribers get to try the Karinga from Kenya, which is fruity like the Nacimiento Pacas, but of the SL28 and SL34 variety. Both of our espresso coffees are also exclusively prepared for our subscribers. More details below. Remember to check out the latest episode of our Coffee Subscription “Tasting with Friends” video above to follow along as me and our Bar Manager, Stephanie (our longest serving employee), taste and discuss some of the delicious coffees we have in store for you this month…
Filter
Nacimiento Pacas, Honduras 1 bag, 2 bags, 3 bags
Producer: Jobneel Caceres Dios
Harvest: June 2018
Origin: Santa Barbara, Honduras
Cultivar: Pacas
Process: Washed
Flavour notes: Stone fruit, blackberries & black currants
This is one of Jobneel’s last pickings during the 2018 Harvest. This Pacas variety grows at the top of his farm Nacimiento at 1800 meters above sea level. This lot was picked and processed in June 2018. Because of the longer maturation times compared to the Pacas he has planted at the lower part of his farm (picked in March and April) this coffee has a more intense fruity flavour and more complex acidity. Jobneel’s «late harvest» coffees are always a delight to taste and has consistently been some of my favourite coffees. This lot is no exception with loads of stone fruit and berry flavours similar to what you can find in some Kenyan coffees.
Caballero Java, Honduras 2 bags, 3 bags
Producer: Marysabel Caballero & Moises Herrera
Harvest: February – March 2018
Origin: La Paz, Honduras
Cultivar: Java
Process: Washed
Flavour notes: Green tea & milk chocolate
Marysabel and Moises grow very little of this rare “Java” cultivar. It always tastes fruity and floral when I taste it straight from the drying tables, but after some resting and transportation to Norway, the flavour in the coffee develops more towards a rich green tea flavour with a full body. A rare and interesting flavour profile from Honduras.
Karinga, Kenya 3 bags
Producer: Several smallholder farmers
Harvest: December 2017
Origin: Kiambu, Kenya
Cultivar: SL28 & SL34
Process: Washed
Flavour notes: Black currants & rose hips
We bought this beautiful coffee from Kenya last year and also went to visit the Karinga wet mill in November during my trip to Kenya. This coffee is grown at around 1900 masl in Kiambu where the climate is cool and makes the coffee ripen slower and develop more flavour, sweetness and acidity. Most of the members who sell their coffee cherries to this wet mill grow mainly the SL28 cultivar and have not been planting the hybrids Batian and Ruiru 11. The SL28 cultivar is famous for it’s fruity flavour and high quality. It also has less problems with leaf rust at this altitude and produces well and that is why the farmers have continued to grow this cultivar. For me this coffee was a standout while I was buying coffees in Kenya last year and it still tastes super intense. Not only does it show the classic rose hip and black currant flavours, but you can also get hints of goose berries and rhubarb. It is a very complex coffee that displays layers of flavour as it cools, so make sure you enjoy this coffee at vairous temperatures.
