Aricha #28
The Bagersh family is considered quality pioneers not only in Etiopia but around the world. They are committed to improving the quality of the coffee in Ethiopia as well as the social welfare of the coffee growers in their coffee region. Together with an American exporter, Ninety Plus Coffee, they have developed consistent methods of perfecting the production of extremely tasty coffees. They are actively using sugar analysis of the coffee cherries during harves to ensure that only the ripest cherries gets picked. Their hard work does not only pay in terms of quality, it also enables them to sell the coffee at a much higher price because the demand for these coffees are high. This lot of aricha coffee is only 360 kilos in total. The coffee is organicly grown but we have not got the Norwegian certification for it.
Producer: Niney plus coffee, together with the Bagersh family and several coffee smallholders in Ethiopia.
Harvest: February / March 2008
Origin: Aricha, Yirga Chefe, Etiopia.
Growing conditions: 1850 – 1950 m.a.s.
Farm size: Mix of coffees from several smallholders in Aricha.
Botanical variety: Mix of 20 – 25 local varieties.
Process: The coffee cherries are hand picked when they are fully ripe. The skin and pulp is not removed before the coffee is dried on african raised drying beds. When the cherries are dry, the husk is removed and the beans are cleaned and sorted before they are vacuumpacked and shipped to Norway. This process is called dry or natural processing. It minimizes the use of water and is therefore more friendly to the environment. If done correctly, the coffees gets sweeter and has more intensity, as in this small lot of coffee.
We roast the Aricha #28 in 2 ways:
1. Light for filter coffee, french press, aeropress, etc.
2. A darker roast for espresso machine, bialetti, moka pots, etc.
Coffee from Aricha has been of great success this year. Not only did the Swedish Barista Champion, Daniel Remheden get 4th place in the World Barista Championship this year using only Aricha coffee, our very own barista Chris Kolbu used it as a part of his presentation when he took 9th place in the same competition.
We also won the Nordic Roaster competition in 2008, competing with the previous Aricha lot #7.
