New Brew Bar

Due to limited capacity during weekends we have decided to open up our cupping room during Saturdays and Sundays for brewing black coffee to our guests. This way we are able to serve those of you who only want a black coffee while visiting our store. We know how frustrating it is to stand in line sometimes and hopefully our cupping room brew bar will help things move a bit quicker.

The brew bar will only be open during weekends and we will be serving our full Aeropress menu. In addition you will be able to pay for whole bean coffee, books, etc. Of course we invite you also to come and hang out to ask us questions. The Cupping room was made to teach our customers about coffee, and most likely the person working there will have time to answer and help you become a better home barista.

If you want your cappuccino and latte, you still need to order them in our espresso bar, but hopefully the line will not be as long as before.

The Brew bar will be open for the first time on Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th of December from around 12 o’clock. We will be serving some new lots from both the Caballero family and a new Bourbon from Nacimiento.

2010 World Barista Championship

Tim and I will be going to London this afternoon to watch the 2010 World Barista Championship and the SCAE exhibition.

I will be holding a roasting seminar on thursday morning, while Tim V will be organizing the 2010 World Aeropress Championship.

We are also sponsoring the WBC brew bar with coffee as well as the La Marzocco stand with some Cielito Lindo Espresso.

If you are not able to attend and cheer for our 2010 Norwegian Barista Champion, Oda Misje Haug, make sure you watch it live on the WBC site on thursday at around 2pm.

2010 DAC Champion Marie Hagemeister

A huge congratulations to Marie Hagemeister of Europa in Copenhagen for winning the Danish Aeropress Championships over the weekend. She fought off eight other competitors through three rounds to quite convincingly take 1st place. Her brew was consistently the sweetest and cleanest cup during the competition. Taking second place was Jeppe Hasager from Behag Din Smag. Both Marie and Jeppe have automatic entrance into the WACs in London.

A big thank you to all the sponsors of the event, which included Kontra Coffee, Behag Din Smag, Sigfreds, SCAE Denmark, Marista and most especially Jens and Björg and all the sexy staff of Europa 1989.

Aeropress recipe from the Nordic Barista Cup competition

Yesterday, during the Nordic Barista Cup in Iceland, the 5 Nordic teams were asked to make as many Aeropressed coffees as possible in 5 minutes. All teams used the same coffee but they could decide upon the grind setting, water to coffee ratio temperature and steep times. They were judged on the cup quality and the amount of cups served by 5 dedicated judges.

Norway won the competition serving an astonishing number of 37 aeropressed cups made using only 3 Aeropresses. They also won the price for best taste. Congratulations!

Here is the recipe that the Norwegian team used to win the NBC Aeropress competition:

20 grams of Costa Rican coffee from Brumas del Zurqui
Grind on filter grind (4 on an Mahlkönig Guatemala grinder)
2 dl of boiling water
10 second steep time
Press all you can after the steep time and serve with a smile.

Yesterday we had a shipment of the new Aeropress, which are now made from copolyester instead of polycarbonate, we’re not all that good with our plastics, but it seems the change in material has resulted in a beautiful crystal clear Aeropress. If you happen to be more of a polycarbonate kind of person, then if you hurry, you can get your hands on one of the final 3 cloudy blue old school Aeropress’ from the store or the webshop.
